Amy’s Story

“To anyone that may be watching. If you’re drowning, if you can’t get out of bed, if you feel hopeless, if you feel like someone has just put you in a dark hole and has covered you up […] I would like for you to know that without a doubt, TMS can help you. All you have to do is show up” says Amy, who had MagVenture TMS Therapy (formerly known as MagVita TMS Therapy) for her depression. Amy didn’t used to have friends or make friends, she never went out for dinner or to concerts and now she has “more friends that she even wants,” she says with a big, happy smile. Amy’s life has changed so much after she had TMS Therapy for depression and her message is clear: “You have to have a little bit of faith” that life could be different and that TMS could be a solution for you.

This is her story about how MagVenture TMS Therapy lifted her out of depression. It is also the story of how her stepmother saw Cindy come out of the depression. “Within 2 weeks, I noticed a tiny, positive change,” Cindy says. Her stepmother calls it a “miracle” to see Cindy come out of depression and the TMS Director says that Cindy came in with a very high depression score and achieved remission. After having received MagVenture TMS Therapy Cindy is now living her live again. “My husband got his wife back, my son got his mother back and I started living life more fully”. “TMS literally saved my life,” Cindy says. Oliver’s Story

“I really honestly didn’t expect much,” says Oliver about TMS treatment. He was “grasping at straws” when he decided to try TMS treatment for his depression. Before that he had struggled with depression for years and had reduced his aspirations in life to “just staying functional” despite the fact that he wanted to pursue a career in neuroscience. Before he tried MagVenture TMS Therapy, he had already tried a number of different treatments and felt he had nothing to lose when he decided to give TMS therapy a go. “I have hope”, Oliver now says about his life after receiving TMS treatment.

PRESS RELEASE – May 31, 2022

Patients with pandemic worsened, medication resistant depression and OCD are regaining a better quality of life with reduced and even remitted symptoms using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) at the Center for Family Psychiatry in Saline, MI.

The prevalence of depression and anxiety increased during the pandemic and worsened for many patients suffering from pharmacologically treatment resistant mood disorders. Finding hope, the Center for Family Psychiatry (CFFP) in Saline, Michigan reports success with TMS treatment for such patients. In addition, CFFP announces its new website with information on TMS for patients, their families, and mental health workers.

SALINE, MI, May 31, 2022: A worrisome effect of the pandemic has been the toll on the mental health of the general population, especially in regard to mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, according to multiple data sources. In fact, more than 40% of adults in the United States experienced symptoms of anxiety and/or depressive disorders between August 2020 and the end of February 2021, according to data released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).1 This is a significant increase from the baseline of 7 to 8 percent of the US population suffering from major depression at any given time point.2 Additionally, while the pre-pandemic lifetime prevalence of depression in North America was believed to be between 10 and 20 percent,3 this is likely to have grown substantially with the additional numbers of people who have reported depression and anxiety symptoms during the pandemic.

The pandemic’s disruptive effects such as loneliness, isolation, fear of infection, suffering from infection, fear of death for oneself and loved ones, grief following bereavement, and financial worries are all now cited as contributory factors to increases in anxiety and depression worldwide. Substance abuse has also increased considerably during the last couple of years of the pandemic. This increase in mental suffering has worsened the difficulties faced by patients and their families.

Clearly, restoration of mental health is key to a return to normal and economic recovery. However, factors that pose challenges to post-pandemic mental health recovery include a) inadequate access to mental health providers especially in underserved areas, and b) inadequate response to traditional pharmacological regimens in certain patients, historically up to 30% of all drug treated cases.4

Fortunately, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment at the Center for Family Psychiatry (CFFP) in Saline, MI is helping local patients suffering from such drug resistant Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in regaining a better quality of life with reduced symptoms and even remission.

“Since starting to operate CFFP over 17 years ago, we have always had a subset of depression and OCD patients who were non-responsive to traditional pharmacological treatments. More so, in the last couple of years with the pandemic related stressors, there has been a substantial increase in acuity of such patients, which is frustrating for the patients and practitioners. We have been following developments in a number of modalities for attempting to provide relief to our partially responsive or non-responsive patients,” said Dr. Ravi S. Kirbat, MD, Medical Director of CFFP.

TMS in particular has emerged as a key successful next-generation treatment modality for drug resistant MDD and OCD, supported by a number of large, well-structured studies conducted over the last two decades. TMS works by excitation of neurons in identified cortical regions of the brain by highly controlled and precisely delivered magnetic pulses. These magnetic pulses are generated by a magnetic coil placed on the scalp by FDA approved equipment, and travel as magnetic field waves through the cranium (without any incision or “invasion”) into a targeted part of the brain for desired therapeutic effects. In summary, TMS treatment:

1. Is non-invasive, non-sedating, and does not affect memory and cognitive functions; no insertions are required, and there is no disruption to normal activity;

2. Can be an adjunct or stand-alone treatment based on a patient’s particular clinical situation;

3. Is covered by most insurance plans – CFFP assists patients with the reimbursement and financing process;

4. Is provided by qualified practitioners; and

5. Is available at CFFP’s easy access facility with ample free parking.

“To address the growing numbers of treatment resistant mood disorder cases, CFFP extended its treatment line to include FDA-approved TMS Therapy in early 2021. TMS treatment results at the clinic have been impressive, with response rates ranging from 60 to 70% of patients showing improvement and remission rates around 40% of patients completing treatment. These are significant response rates in these serious, hard to treat cases of mood disorders,” added Dr. Kirbat. This is consistent with results at major hospitals and clinics using TMS.5

Mentioning the new CFFP website, Dr. Kirbat further said, “We realize that TMS therapy is still not widely known in our area. In order to help patients, their families, and the mental health community, we are glad to offer additional information and resources about TMS on our new website at www.cffptms.com. This website now provides descriptions of TMS and the TMS treatment process. It also addresses frequently asked questions and provides references to other patients’ stories. We believe these resources can help our community understand TMS better.”

Locally, Saline and surrounding areas (adjoining counties of Lenawee, Monroe and eastern Washtenaw) are chronically underserved for mental health services. CFFP has, since 2004, been proudly filling this gap. Its practitioners (therapists and prescribers) have been diligently and at full capacity helping patients since the onset of the pandemic. Kelly Posch, Office Manager at CFFP, stated, “Based on our in-house practice as well as data from mental health practices around us, we clearly faced a need for a solution for patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression and OCD. Our TMS treatment is providing hope to our most serious cases. While there are a number of FDA approved TMS delivery systems, the one at the CFFP is proven to be effective and well tolerated. Additionally, many insurance carriers now cover TMS courses as standard treatments.”

In describing CFFP’s experience with TMS treatments, Ms. Posch added, “I have been working at the clinic for about 10 years and have seen a fair number of patients struggle with different medication regimens over this time. When we introduced TMS at our practice in 2021, most patients who opted for this treatment improved. None of these patients have reported any major side effects in the treatment provided to date.”  Addressing availability of the treatment, Ms. Posch added, “We are available and look forward to helping members of our community achieve higher levels of depression-free mental wellness.”

Patients who have gone through a course of the TMS treatment at CFFP have mostly reported improvements and even remission from depression symptoms in some cases.  “Before getting TMS I was struggling with severe depression and I had really reached a point of absolute hopelessness! I thought I was sentenced to a life of suffering and sadness. I was sure there was really no way to help me,” said one patient who was referred to CFFP for TMS specific treatment by their mental health provider. Discussing the treatment further, the patient added, “I felt very safe with Dr. Kirbat. He spoke to me not like a patient but like a person he had enormous respect for. I wasn’t just my mental illness, I was a whole person. His staff mirrored his respect, kindness, and care for me. Sometimes, it was actually fun because all of them could take my treatment seriously while understanding the healing power of silliness.” Having completed the treatment, the patient added, “I feel lighter! I feel freer! I feel hopeful! TMS truly changed the course of my life.”
